Most Danes speak English fluently. This makes it easy for you to communicate both privately and on the job. However, learning Danish is highly recommended. When you apply for a job and in your future career, it is a great advantage that you are able to speak Danish. It will help you build relations and shows commitment.

How can I learn Danish?

If you want to learn Danish, you can choose between a variety of different courses and educational programmes, which, under certain conditions, are free of charge for foreign nationals over the age of 18.

You will have to start with the course “Danish for the Labour Market”, if you are working or studying in Denmark, or if you are an accompanying spouse. The “Danish for the Labour Market” course is a beginner's course, consisting of up to 250 hours' tuition in five cycles of 50 hours. You can choose between both day and evening courses, and if you complete the course within a year and six months, you have the possibility of continuing on an advanced Danish training programme.

The advanced programmes are divided into six teaching modules and are concluded with a state-controlled exam. There are 3 levels available, and you will be placed on the one that reflects your skill level.

If you are interested in learning Danish for free you can contact your local municipal citizen service centre or International Citizen Service for further advice.

Please note that your right to a Danish language course is valid for one year and six month from the day when you receive the course offer.
